A nice stamped brass hat insignia of the style used by several prewar South Carolina militia companies. It features a palmetto tree with two shields at its base, each bearing one of the state’s mottos. The left shield reads “ANIMIS OPIBUSQE PARATI,” which means “Prepared in Minds and Resources.” The opposite shield reads “DUM SPIRO SPERO,” meaning “While I Breathe I Hope.” Between the shields, at the base of the palmetto, it reads “1776.” On the reverse are four attachment wires. This piece appears unused and is in excellent condition. It measures just 1 7/8” tall.
