11 CDVs from Album of Private George Brockway, Cowan's 1st New York Independent Battery

$650.00

Item No. 4192859

A nice collection of eleven CDV images from the album of George Brockway, who was a member of Cowan’s First New York Independent Light Artillery (1st New York Battery). This battery served in all the campaigns of the 6th Corps between May 1862 and June 1865. Five images are of identified soldiers in uniform, two are of identified soldiers in civilian clothing, one features a civilian friend of Brockway’s, one is of an African American man, and two are outdoor views bearing Bellefontaine, Ohio, backmarks. From the top left the images are:

  1. Private James Jefferds; previous service in 77th New York Vols; mustered out June 1865; E. M. Collins, Syracuse, New York backmark; 2-cent revenue stamp on verso; Note the round pin on his jacket, which resembles the one worn by Horace Post.

  2. Private Horace A. Post; previous service in 77th New York Vols; POW Spotsylvania Court House, May 24, 1864; Returned, February 18, 1865; mustered out June 1865; E. M. Collins, Syracuse, New York backmark; 2-cent revenue stamp on verso; There is a round pin on Post’s shell jacket, with the symbol of the 6th Corps at its center.

  3. (Likely) Private John J. Bartholomew, Battery A, 1st New York Light; deserted March 10, 1863, at Camp Berry, Washington, D.C.; note NYS buttons; No backmark; 2-cent revenue stamp on verso.

  4. Corporal Alverton B. Miller; previous service in Battery E, 1st New York Light; mustered out June 1865; E. M. Collins, Syracuse, New York backmark; 2-cent revenue stamp on verso; Miller wears a 6th Corps badge on the breast of his shell jacket.

  5. Private Nathaniel B. Topping; mustered out June 1865; E. M. Collins, Syracuse, New York backmark; 2-cent revenue stamp on verso; like the previous soldier, Topping wears a 6th Corps badge on the breast of his shell jacket.

  6. Corporal Orrin L. Daniels; previous service in Battery E, 1st New York Light; mustered out June 1865; T. R. Rutherford, Bath, New York backmark; 2-cent revenue stamp on verso.

  7. Private Michael E. McCormick (in civilian clothing); previous service in 121st New York Infantry; mustered out June 1865; Knapp & Marble, Syracuse, New York backmark; 3-cent revenue stamp on verso.

  8. George Arnold (friend); This is possibly George W. Arnold, 1843-63, who lived in Brockway's hometown of Auburn, NY. A slip of paper with the CDV states "notice of death 3/8/63”; Brady’s Gallery backmark, New York.

  9. Unidentified African American man; Iowa backmark (Brockway moved to Iowa in 1866); C. M. Armstrong backmark, Iowa.

  10. Outdoor CDV of a Building, Brockway wrote on back "Armory”; F. M. Rudy, Bellefontaine, Ohio backmark; Several civilians are visible in and around the building.

  11. Outdoor CDV of a Building, Brockway wrote on back "Headquarters" and something else I cannot make out; Rudy & Bro., Bellefontaine, Ohio backmark; Several civilians are visible in and around the building.

The images are in good to very good condition with light toning and foxing. The corners on several of the CDVs were slightly trimmed from the album placement.
