Item No. 4858951

A wonderful CDV view of General William Mahone, the fierce veteran of nearly all of Robert E. Lee’s campaigns in the east. In April 1865 at Sailor’s Creek, with the remnants of the Army of Northern Virginia in full retreat, Lee asked, “My God, has the army dissolved?” It was Mahone who answered, “No, General, here are troops ready to do their duty,” to which Lee replied, “Yes, there are still some true men left.” A defiant Mahone is pictured in this Mathew Brady image. Measures about 2 1/2” x 4”. This image was No. 94 in the General B. J. D. Irwin collection of U.S. & C.S. commanders.
