1864 Letter by Colonel William P. Lyon, 13th Wisconsin, to Lieut. Colonel James F. Chapman — "Will you let one of the boys come down tomorrow afternoon on the train with Mr. Jones’ mare?"

A September 1864 letter in which Colonel Willam P. Lyon of the 13th Wisconsin, then responsible for the defense of the Memphis & Charleston Railroad as it ran through Huntsville, Alabama, writes to his lieutenant colonel at Brownsboro to request transportation of a horse. A Wisconsin state representative from Racine, Lyon was later commissioned brevet brigadier general and in 1871 was appointed to the Wisconsin Supreme Court.

The letter was written on one side of a small letter sheet measuring about 7 3/4” x 7”. Creased at the original folds. The full letter reads:

Head Qrs. M. & C. R.R. Defences
Huntsville, Ala. Sept. 19 1864

Col:
Will you let one of the boys come down tomorrow afternoon on the train with Mr. Jones’ mare? I will arrange during the day with the Supt. about transportation.
