This group of eight Confederate manuscript documents focuses primarily on Company D of the 1st Battalion (later reorganized as the 1st Regiment) South Carolina Volunteer Cavalry, capturing early-war coastal defense operations and the company’s subsequent transfer to Virginia.

The collection features two significant early-war special orders. The first is an extract of Special Orders No. 28, issued from the Department of South Carolina and Georgia headquarters at Pocotaligo on April 23, 1862. Hand-signed by Major John Robinson Waddy as Assistant Adjutant General by order of Major General John C. Pemberton, this document orders a General Court Martial under Colonel R. F. Stevens of Holcombe’s Legion to reconvene at Adams Run to reconsider proceedings against Captain Rion and three lieutenants. Major Waddy, a prominent VMI graduate and veteran of the 4th U.S. Artillery, served as Pemberton’s primary coastal adjutant before following him west to serve as Chief of Staff during the Vicksburg Campaign.

The second order, Special Orders No. 113, originates from the 3rd Military District headquarters at Adams Run on May 31, 1862. It details Private W. D. Chisolm of the 1st Battalion Cavalry to extra duty in the Commissary Department under Major James Pagan. This order is hand-signed by Assistant Adjutant General Captain Asa L. Evans by order of his older brother, Brigadier General Nathan "Shanks" Evans.

The administrative and physical status of the company is further recorded in an undated 1862 manuscript ledger titled "Return of ordnance and Ordnance stores." This handwritten report list the number of active personnel alongside their standing inventory of sabers, varieties of firearms, and ammunition.

A run of four related pay and descriptive certificates issued at Summerville, South Carolina, between September 28 and 29, 1862, documents a major logistical pivot as the unit transferred from the South Carolina coast to the Virginia front. Hand-signed by company commander Captain William Alexander Walker, these certificates document the transfer of the unit’s vital horses to the Virginia theater under Lieutenant John S. Wilson. The certificates individually profile 20-year-old Quartermaster agent Private J. B. Atkinson, 21-year-old horse handler Private J. H. Westbrook, 27-year-old North Carolina-born trader Sergeant W. G. Jarrell, and 21-year-old Private T. M. Sanders. Each document records enlistment details from September 1861 at Chester, physical descriptions, back-pay calculations, and outstanding fifty-dollar wartime bounties.

The final item is a late-war logistical letter sent from the Post Quartermaster Office in Columbia, South Carolina, dated November 30, 1864. Written and signed by Captain Julien L. Cook to C.S. Wilson in Chester, the letter tracks administrative paperwork, confirming that Cook signed and transferred original abstract estimates for August, September, and October 1864 to a Major Sloan.

The documents were written upon letter sheets of various sizes. Creased at original folds. Three of the original transmittal covers are included, one of which bears two Confederate postage stamps. Transcripts appear below.

Cavalry under command of Lt. J. S. Wilson.

The said J. H. Westbrook was last paid by H. L. Mason Q.Q.M. to include the 30th day of June 1862 and has pay due from that time to the present date.
