Item No. 7520998

An Army of the Potomac headquarters pass dated August 4, 1862, permitting Assistant Surgeon George W. H. Calver to pass through the lines to Washington, DC. It is signed by Brigadier General Seth Williams, adjutant general to Major General George B. McClellan. George W. H. Calver was then serving as assistant surgeon of the 1st Pennsylvania Cavalry. He resigned August 2, 1862—just two days before this pass was written—and that fall became assistant surgeon of the newly formed 147th Pennsylvania. That regiment would be engaged at Chancellorsville and Gettysburg in 1863 before transferring with the 12th Corps to the western theater, where they fought in the Atlanta Campaign and the March to the Sea in 1864. Calver received a brevet promotion to major in early 1865 and mustered out that July. The pass measures about 4” x 2 1/2” and is creased where it was originally folded.
