1865 Signed Requisition for Mule Team "for removing refuse in Manchester" Contraband Camp Near Richmond, Virginia
Item No. 5788795
This June 1865 requisition authorized the bearer to “have one team for removing refuse in Manchester,” directly across the James River from Richmond, Virginia. Just after the war ended, the federal army established a camp there to house formerly enslaved people who had escaped or been freed as Union forces advanced. In the document, a Lieutenant Jewett requests a team, likely of horses or mules, to aid in clearing the neighborhood in the wake of the rebel evacuation of the city. On the reverse, Major Hiram F. Gerrish, quartermaster of the 24th Corps (formerly of the 2nd New Hampshire), requests that a “Mr. Moffiett...furnish the team called for.”
The requisition was written on a portion of a letter sheet measuring 7 3/4” x 6 1/4”. Creased at the original folds.
