Item No. 7472856
This printed general order was issued by the War Department in Washington, DC, on June 24, 1863. It states the details of three courts martial:
1. Captain A. Von Puttkkammer, 11th New York Independent Battery — Convicted of cowardice and disobedience of General Daniel Sickles’ orders for failing to advance his battery on the 3rd Corps line at the Battle of Chancellorsville. He was dismissed from the service.
2. Private Albert O. Smith, 15th Massachusetts Volunteers — Convicted for falling asleep while on picket. Sentenced to death by the court, President Lincoln ordered that he instead be returned to duty.
3. Private Martin Troy, 34th New York — Convicted of entering a private home and abusing the occupants and their property. Troy then punched a lieutenant from the 6th Pennsylvania Reserves who attempted to intervene. The court sentenced him to death. President Lincoln commuted the sentence to three months in prison, to be followed by a “disgraceful discharge at the expiration of that period.”
The document is 7 pages and measures about 4 3/4” x 7 1/4”. Fine condition. Two holes in the left margin for placement in a binder. The order was among an archive of documents from the brigade staff of the 3rd Brigade, 2nd Division, 3rd Corps, Army of the Potomac (archive of Col. Thomas H. Dunham, 11th Mass.). It is marked as having been received July 20, 1863.
