1864 Confederate Conscription Document Listing 13 Men Drafted to Serve from Georgetown District, South Carolina

$175.00

Item No. 2801780

An 1864 handwritten Confederate conscription document titled, “Conscripts recommended for light duty in Georgetown District under Act 17th February 1864.” On that date, the Confederate Congress had passed a sweeping new draft law aimed at replenishing its dwindling forces, making all white men age 17 to 50 eligible to be drafted. The document lists the names of 13 conscripts along with their birthplace, age, appearance, occupation, and the role they were assigned. These were in supporting roles, such as the commissary and quartermaster departments. On the reverse it is docketed, with indication that it was prepared by the enrolling officer, Lieutenant B. S. Howard.

The document measures about 15 1/2” x 7 3/4”. Creased at the original folds. Very minor toning. It was part of the John S. Wilson family archive of Chester District, South Carolina. Wilson served in Company D “Chester Troop,” 1st South Carolina Cavalry.
