Item No. 4676389
A Confederate payroll document written out by First Lieutenant John S. Wilson of Company D (Chester Troop), 1st South Carolina Cavalry, on August 3, 1862, while in camp on John’s Island. Wilson writes to a Captain Mayson, “the following members of Capt. [William A.] Walker’s Company “D” have signed the payrolls for May & June in my presence. You will please pay them the several amounts opposite their names and I will have the same discounted, when Capt. Walker draws the pay for the Company.” Forty Company D men are then listed with the amounts paid.
The Chester Troop saw extensive service in South Carolina and Virginia, fighting at Pocotaglio, Fredericksburg, Brandy Station, and Gettysburg. Later, the company returned to South Carolina and was posted at the Florence Stockade, where they were responsible for tracking and recapturing escaped Union prisoners.
The document was written on both sides of a blue ledger sheet measuring 8” x 12”. Creased at the original folds. It was part of the John S. Wilson family archive of Chester District, South Carolina.
