1862 Confederate Muster Roll for 1st South Carolina Cavalry Signed by Colonel John L. Black
Item No. 1713700
An original Confederate muster roll from late 1862 listing the field officers and staff of the 1st South Carolina Cavalry, Colonel John L. Black, commanding. Black, who signed the document, was a York planter who had attended West Point, but did not graduate. He was later wounded while commanding his troops at Upperville and Brandy Station. The muster lists J. D. Twiggs as lieutenant colonel, noting that he was “absent commanding detachment of Regt at Adams Run” on the coast. J. Yates is listed as assistant surgeon, but with the note that he was “suspended from all rank, pay, & emolument by a Gen Court Martial from 13th Aug’t 1862 for the space of nine months.” H. L. Mayson, regimental quartermaster, is listed as “absent on duty in Charleston.” The information for three enlisted men is found in the bottom section of the form. It is then signed by Colonel Black on the verso.
The 1st South Carolina Cavalry saw extensive service in South Carolina and Virginia, fighting at Pocotaglio, Fredericksburg, Brandy Station, and Gettysburg.
The document was written on both sides of a large pre-printed form measuring about 14 3/4” x 11 3/4”. Creased at the original folds. Some soiling and toning as seen in the photographs, as well as areas of paper loss. It was part of the John S. Wilson family archive of Chester District, South Carolina (Wilson commanded Company D).
