Unused Civil War patriotic envelope featuring a satirical cartoon ridiculing Jefferson Davis and the Confederacy’s failed efforts to secure foreign financial support. Davis is shown carrying placards advertising “Southern Bonds” and “Jeff Davis $20,000,” while an English financier standing beneath the sign “Loans Taken” refuses his offer. Below the illustration appears a humorous verse concluding, “Those bonds will never do, my friend, / For Johnny Bull has said it… Your thieving friends have d——d your credit.” Produced by Brown & Ryan, New York. Has some residue on the reverse from a one-time album mounting. Measures about 5 1/2” x 3”.
