Item No. 1167324

A CDV portrait of Kentuckian Wickliffe Cooper, best known as a staff officer to Union General William “Bull” Nelson and later colonel of the 4th Kentucky Cavalry, who received battle honors for his bravery at Shiloh, Corinth, and Chickamauga. The photograph was removed from a family album assembled by Bernard J. D. Irwin, the noted army surgeon, naturalist, and Medal of Honor recipient (the two served together on Nelson’s staff). After the war, Cooper remained in the regular army and was assigned to the 7th U.S. Cavalry, serving with George Armstrong Custer during the Indian Wars period. He died of suicide in 1867. At the base of the mount is the imprint of photographers Webster & Bro of Louisville, Kentucky. It has slightly trimmed corners and measures about 2 3/8” x 3 3/4".
