A very clear CDV portrait of General William Tecumseh Sherman in 1862 or 1863 by photographers Bishop & Needles of Memphis, Tennessee. The general wears the stars of a major general on his shoulders. His frock coat is unbuttoned, striking a rather casual pose. The photographers’ imprint is on the reverse along with a pencil inscription identifying Sherman. The carte measures about 2 3/8” x 4”.

Sherman was one of the Union Army's most prominent commanders, leading the campaigns for Atlanta, the March to the Sea, and the Carolinas in the final year of the Civil War. He succeeded Ulysses S. Grant as Commanding General of the U.S. Army in 1869 and remained in that position until his retirement in 1884.
