CDV of General William T. Sherman and his generals, photographed by Mathew Brady at his Washington studio in May 1865, around the time of the Grand Review of the Armies. Over the previous year, these generals led Union troops through the Atlanta Campaign, on the March to the Sea, and then north through the Carolinas as the war concluded. Arriving in Washington, the western armies marched proudly down Pennsylvania Avenue on the second day of the Grand Review. The generals are, from left to right, Oliver O. Howard, John A. Logan, William B. Hazen, Sherman, Jefferson C. Davis, Henry W. Slocum, and Joseph A. Mower. A more widely produced version of this image included a seated General Frank Blair on the far right-hand side. Blair had not arrived at Brady’s studio in time to join his fellow generals for the portrait. Later that day, Brady photographed Blair separately and spliced him in via photomontage (see example here). On the reverse is the imprint of Samuel M. Fassett, who is well known for his 1865 portraits of Sherman taken in Fassett’s Chicago studio. Also on the reverse is a pencil inscription identifying the generals. The mount has been slightly trimmed to about 3 3/4” x 2 3/8”.
