A CDV portrait of General Philip H. Sheridan as major general. On the reverse is the imprint of E. & H. T. Anthony of New York, along with a pencil inscription misidentifying Sheridan as General Joseph Hooker. Sheridan was one of the Union Army's most successful cavalry commanders during the Civil War. Rising from command of a division in the Western Theater to leadership of the Cavalry Corps of the Army of the Potomac, he played a key role in the Shenandoah Valley Campaign of 1864 and the Appomattox Campaign in 1865.
