A CDV portrait of Dr. Samuel L. Cheaney, signed on the reverse as surgeon of the 29th Illinois Volunteers. Cheaney began the Civil War as a sergeant in the 3rd Illinois Cavalry before being commissioned First Assistant Surgeon, and later Surgeon, of the 29th Illinois Infantry. He served through the regiment’s major Western Theater campaigns, including Shiloh, Vicksburg, Spanish Fort, and Mobile. Following the war, Cheaney became a leading physician in Harrisburg, Illinois, and later served in the Illinois State Senate. This CDV, depicting Cheaney in civilian attire, bears the imprint of Memphis photographer Y. Day. The photograph was part of a family album assembled by Bernard John Dowling Irwin, the noted army surgeon, naturalist, and Medal of Honor recipient. Measures about 2 3/8” x 4” with trimmed corners.
