A CDV of a portrait engraving of Stephen A. Douglas (1813-1861), the influential Illinois senator and leader of the Democratic Party who played a central role in the national debate over slavery in the years leading up to the Civil War. He championed the doctrine of popular sovereignty through the Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854 and became nationally known for his debates with Abraham Lincoln during the 1858 Illinois Senate race. Douglas was the Northern Democratic nominee for president in 1860, losing to Lincoln, and died only a few months after the outbreak of the Civil War. The CDV bears no photographer’s imprint, although the subject is identified as “S. A. Douglas” at the base of the mount. Measures about 2 1/4” x 3 3/4” with trimmed corners.
