Group Portrait CDV of Officers and Civilians, Possibly from the U.S. Army Quartermaster Department, by Philp & Solomons, Washington, DC — Alexander Gardner
Item No. 7562881
A group portrait produced by the Washington DC “Metropolitan Gallery” of Philp & Solomons. It was quite possibly made by Alexander Gardner, who was employed by the gallery. The image features two unidentified Army officers—a colonel (at right) and captain (at left)—along with two civilian men. The civilians are also identified, although according to the seller the image came from an album belonging to George H. Howell, who had reportedly been a civilian employee in the Quartermaster Department. A portrait of Howell from that album (pictured here, but not included) suggests that he is the seated civilian in the CDV portrait, and perhaps his colleagues are also of the QM Department. Measures 2 1/4” x 4”.
