CDV of Union Officer, Likely a Surgeon, with Memphis Backmark
Item No. 3092343
A strikingly clear vignette CDV view of a Union officer wearing the shoulder straps of a major or lieutenant colonel, photographed by Peplow & Balch of Memphis, Tennessee, likely in 1862 or 1863. The image originates from an album associated with Medal of Honor recipient Bernard J. D. Irwin and appears alongside identified medical personnel from the Western Theater, suggesting the officer may be a surgeon who served in the Army’s Memphis hospitals under Irwin’s command. The carte has been trimmed down to about 2 1/2” x 3 3/8”.
