CDV of Medical Officer Identified as Surgeon Joel M. Mack, 113th Illinois
Item No. 5883148
A Union Army surgeon poses in this tinted CDV view by photographer S. P. Smith of Kankakee, Illinois. The officer holds his gloves in one hand and his hat in the other. A medical service badge is visible on the hat, with the brass number 113 affixed to it. A medical service insignia can also be seen on his shoulder strap. We can be pretty certain that he is Joel M. Mack of Kankakee, who was commissioned surgeon of the 113th Illinois Volunteers in October 1862. He would resign in April 1864, and after the war lived in Portland, Oregon. On the verso is Smith’s imprint, along with a modern pencil notation identifying Mack. Slightly trimmed corners. Measures about 2 1/2” x 4”.
