An exceptionally clear CDV view of a Union officer identified by signature on the reverse as “Lt H. F. Gerrish / Hd Qrs 24 Army Corps / January 1865.” Hiram F. Gerrish enlisted as a private in the 2nd New Hampshire Volunteers in June 1861. The regiment fought at First Bull Run, served in Joe Hooker’s division on the Peninsula, and was heavily engaged at Second Bull Run and Gettysburg. Gerrish was discharged for promotion in June 1864, and was commissioned a first lieutenant in the 37th U.S. Colored Troops, consisting of men from North Carolina. In May 1865 he was promoted captain in the quartermaster’s department, and received a major’s commission later that same month. Gerrish mustered out in February 1866.

Above the verso signature is the lovely imprint of photographer J. Morgan of Concord, New Hampshire. The carte is in excellent condition and measures about 2 1/2” x 4”.
