A signed CDV circa 1864 of Brevet Brigadier General Charles S. Lovell. Born in Massachusetts in 1811, Lovell enlisted in the regular army in 1831, rising through the ranks to first lieutenant in 1838. He fought with the 6th US Infantry during the Mexican War and was present at Churubusco and Chapultapec, among other battles. Upon the outbreak of civil war, Lovell was promoted to major of the 10th US Infantry. As part of the 5th Corps, he led his regiment and sometimes his brigade at Gaines’s Mill, Malvern Hill, Second Bull Run, Antietam, and Fredericksburg. Promoted to lieutenant colonel in 1863, he spent the rest of the war on provost marshal duty in Wisconsin and was promoted brevet brigadier general in March 1865. Lovell remained in the Army after the war and died at Taylor Barracks in Louisville in 1871.

The image features a bust-view of Lovell wearing a double-breasted frock coat of a lieutenant colonel or major. On the reverse is the imprint of photographer H. N. Roberts of Madison, Wisconsin, under a 2-cent revenue stamp. Lovell signs in ink, “Yours truly / Chas. S. Lovell.” Measures about 2 3/8” x 4”.
