A vignette CDV from a portrait of Edmund Burke, the Irish-born British statesman, political philosopher, and one of the eighteenth century’s most influential orators. A longtime member of Parliament, he championed conciliation with the American colonies while criticizing British policies that he believed threatened constitutional liberty. Burke’s speeches and writings, particularly his defense of representative government and ordered liberty, profoundly influenced political thought on both sides of the Atlantic and continued to be widely admired throughout the nineteenth century. The carte was trimmed to about 2 1/2” x 3 1/4”. It was part of a family album assembled by Bernard John Dowling Irwin, the noted army surgeon, naturalist, and Medal of Honor recipient.
