A CDV portrait of a young man clothed in the uniform of a Confederate officer. Close inspection of his collar insignia suggests he is a first or second lieutenant. There is no photographer’s imprint or identifying information on the reverse. The image was part of the family album assembled by Bernard J. D. Irwin, the noted Union surgeon, naturalist, and Medal of Honor recipient. It is unclear what the young officer’s connection to Irwin was, as the album included only two Confederate officers, this one and another of John S. Mosby. The image has been trimmed down to about 2 3/8” x 3 3/8” and has trimmed corners.
