A vignette CDV view of Benjamin McCulloch in civilian clothing. On the reverse is the imprint of E. & H. T. Anthony of New York. A pencil notation identifying McCulloch is above the imprint. Ben McCulloch was a frontiersman, Texas Ranger, and Confederate brigadier general whose career spanned some of the most turbulent episodes of early Texas and the American West. A veteran of the Texas Revolution and the Mexican War, he became widely respected as a scout and leader on the frontier before serving as U.S. marshal for the Eastern District of Texas. At the start of the Civil War, McCulloch accepted a Confederate commission and commanded troops in the Trans-Mississippi Theater, where he played a key role in the 1861 Battle of Wilson’s Creek, helping secure a Southern victory in Missouri. In March 1862, during the Battle of Pea Ridge, he was killed while reconnoitering Union lines.
