A vignette CDV portrait of Andrew Johnson, the Tennessee senator who was elected vice president in 1864, then became the 17th president of the United States upon the assassination of Abraham Lincoln in 1865. Johnson led the country through the first phases of reconstruction with a contentious, lenient plan for the defeated South that brought him into fierce conflict with Radical Republicans in Congress and led to his impeachment by the House (he was acquitted by a single Senate vote). On the reverse of the carte is the imprint of the Philadelphia Photographic Company. The photograph was part of a family album assembled by Bernard John Dowling Irwin, the noted army surgeon, naturalist, and Medal of Honor recipient. It measures about 2 3/8” x 3 3/4”.
