1884 "Union Commanders" Cabinet Card Featuring Abraham Lincoln, Grant, Sherman, Sheridan, Farragut & Others — Travelers Insurance Advertising Issue
Item No. 4683580
Original nineteenth-century cabinet card featuring the celebrated composite photograph “Union Commanders,” published by the Notman Photo Company of Boston in 1884. The image depicts President Abraham Lincoln seated at center, surrounded by Ulysses S. Grant, William T. Sherman, George G. Meade, Philip H. Sheridan, Winfield Scott Hancock, George H. Thomas, and Admiral David G. Farragut, assembled within an elaborate interior decorated with patriotic artwork and scenes of the Civil War.
Rather than a standard commercial issue, this example was distributed as an advertising premium by The Travelers Life and Accident Insurance Company of Hartford, Connecticut, whose imprint appears on the reverse reading, “With Compliments of The Travelers Life and Accident Insurance Company.” Also on the reverse are contemporary pencil identifications of the men pictured.
Published nearly twenty years after Appomattox, Notman’s composite brought together the Union’s foremost military leaders in a single image that could never have been photographed during the war itself. The result became one of the firm’s best-known Civil War commemorative photographs.
Minor toning to mount. Measures about 4 1/4” x 6 1/2”.
