$325.00

Item No. 0068652

A signed cabinet card featuring John A. Logan, the senator from Illinois and former Civil War general. Logan signs, “Yours truly / John A Logan / Ills.” On the reverse is the imprint of Chicago photographer Charles Mosher. The image dates from the mid-1870s when Mosher’s studio was located at 951 Wabash Avenue. Logan’s portrait has somewhat faded over the years and the image was previously trimmed down to about 4” x 5 1/2”, most likely for an album placement.

General John A. Logan was a prominent Union general during the Civil War and a powerful political figure from Illinois. A former Democrat who became a Republican, he was instrumental in the creation of Memorial Day as a national holiday. After the war, he served in both the U.S. House and Senate. In 1884, Logan ran for Vice President on the Republican ticket with James G. Blaine, but they lost to Grover Cleveland and Thomas A. Hendricks.
