Cut signature of Union General Henry Shaw Briggs of Massachusetts. “H. S. Briggs / Brig Gen / USA / Alexandria Va / Dec 23 1863.” An officer in the 90-day 8th Massachusetts, Briggs was commissioned colonel of the 10th Massachusetts Volunteers. He was seriously wounded at the Battle of Fair Oaks in 1862, was promoted brigadier general, and served primarily in administrative roles for the remainder of the war. The signature dates to Briggs’s time in command of the draft rendezvous camp at Alexandria. Measures about 5” x 2 1/2”.
