Item No. 8338857

A Union Army division-level document dated January 31, 1864, in which Lieutenant Frederick T. Starkweather, an assistant quartermaster in the 1st Division of the 14th Army Corps, estimates the amount of forage that would be required to feed the division’s horses and mules in the month of February. The document lists hundreds of thousands of pounds of corn, oats, hay, or fodder required by the division’s three infantry brigades, its artillery battalion, and its headquarters. It is signed by Starkweather with rank. It is briefly docketed on the reverse, with the signed approval of the division’s commanding officer, Brigadier General Richard W. Johnson.

Johnson was commissioned colonel of the 3rd Kentucky Cavalry in 1861 and in 1862 was captured while pursuing Confederate General John Hunt Morgan. He commanded his division in the 1863 battles of Chickamauga and Missionary Ridge. In May 1864, he was severely wounded at the Battle of New Hope Church. Recovering from his wound, he commanded a cavalry division at the Battle of Nashville.

The document measures about 7 3/4” x 12 1/4”. Creased at the original folds. Some minor ink staining. Else fine.
