1857 Receipt for Hire of "State House" Slave Servants for James P. Adams of South Carolina House of Representatives

$125.00

Item No. 6042176

This receipt, dated October 16, 1857, indicates that James P. Adams paid $60.00 to John P. Adams for the hire of “State House Hands” for July and August of that year. The two men were brothers, with James being a member of the South Carolina House of Representatives, and later during the Civil War was a major in the 10th South Carolina Cavalry Battalion. Evidently James hired slave servants from older brother John, perhaps from the family’s Columbia plantation.

The document is briefly docketed and signed on the reverse by John P. Adams. Measures about 7 3/4” x 3 1/2” and is in excellent condition.

It reads:

Rec’d Oct. 16th 1857 of Jas. P. Adams sixty dollars for Hire of State House Hands for the months of July & August.
$60.
John P. Adams
