February 1864 Order Assigning Confederate General Braxton Bragg to Richmond to Serve as Military Advisor to President Jefferson Davis

The February 24, 1864, order directing that Confederate General Braxton Bragg be reassigned to “the Seat of Government” in Richmond. Bragg had commanded the Army of Tennessee since 1862, but submitted his resignation to President Jefferson Davis after the disastrous defeat at the Battle of Missionary Ridge in November 1863. Under this order, Bragg would become chief military advisor to the president and his administrative abilities put to good use. He would serve in this and other minor military roles through the end of the war. The full transcript appears below.
The printed order measures about 5” x 8”. Discoloration along right margin, perhaps caused by exposure to a flame.
