Item No. 6237238

The officer posed in this late-Civil War CDV by San Francisco photographers Bradley & Rolofson is identified in period ink as W. W. Smith. He wears an officer’s frock coat with an unusual pattern of shoulder straps with two narrow strands of wire across the field. The device on Smith’s cap has two letters at its center (the first appears to be a W). He is perhaps an officer in a California Militia unit. Above the backmark on the reverse it is signed “Yours Truly / W. W. Smith.” A 2-cent revenue stamp is also present, indicating the photo was produced between 1864 and 1866. Excellent condition. Measures 2 1/2” x 4”.
