A pair of CDV portraits of Brevet Major Charles Beaujolais Throckmorton, who served during the war as an officer in the 4th U.S. Artillery. Throckmorton appears in uniform of a first lieutenant in the first image, which has on the reverse the imprint of the Excelsior Gallery of Detroit, Michigan. His cap bears an engineer insignia, although no record of his serving in the engineers was found. The album page out of which the image came clearly identified him as Throckmorton, however. Measures about 2 1/2” x 4 1/4”.

In the second image, Throckmorton wears civilian clothing. He has signed this one on the reverse, “C B Throckmorton / 4th U.S. Arty” over the imprint of the Cadwallader Brothers’ Art Place in Detroit. Both images came out of the family album of Bernard J. D. Irwin, the noted army surgeon, naturalist, and Medal of Honor recipient. Measures about 2 3/8” x 4”.

A Regular Army officer, Throckmorton saw action in several battles, including First Bull Run, Shiloh, and Stones River. He remained in the army after the war and served during the Modoc War and operations against the Nez Perce and other native groups.
