A scarce CDV portrait of Millard Fillmore, thirteenth president of the United States, shown here holding a top hat. The mount bears the imprint of Charles D. Fredricks & Co., “Spécialité,” 587 Broadway, New York. A faint contemporary identification is visible on the reverse. The image measures approximately 2 1/2” x 4” and has slightly trimmed corners.

Fillmore served as President from 1850 to 1853, ascending to the office upon the death of Zachary Taylor. A New York politician and former vice president, he presided over a period of increasing sectional tension and is best known for his support of the Compromise of 1850, including the controversial Fugitive Slave Act. After leaving office, Fillmore remained active in public life, including an unsuccessful run for the presidency in 1856 as the candidate of the Know-Nothing Party. He died in 1874.
