$155.00

Item No. 2324785

This CDV view features Captain Joseph R. Simonds of the 17th Massachusetts. He poses with a resolute expression, seated with his cap on the table next to him. An emboidered hunting horn decorates the cap with the numerals “17” at its center. A modern pencil ID is on the reverse above the backmark of Boston photographer C. Seaver, Jr. A different pose of the same officer appears on Simonds’s listing in HDS. Another view of Simonds resides in the collection of the Medford Historical Society. Simonds was a 43-year-old bookbinder when he was commissioned captain of Company K in August 1861. He served with the 17th throughout most of its campaigns along the North Carolina coast and was mustered out of the service in August 1864. The carte was trimmed to about 2 1/4” x 3 1/2”. It is otherwise in excellent condition as shown.
