The officer featured in this bust-view CDV is George F. Nichols, who in the fall of 1862 was commissioned major in the newly organized 118th New York Infantry. He was promoted lieutenant colonel in July 1863 and was wounded the following May at the Battle of Drewry’s Bluff. Nichols was then promoted to colonel in September 1864, and days later was wounded in the Battle of Fort Harrison. In March 1865 he received a brevet brigadier general’s commission and that June mustered out with the 118th. His signature appears “Geo F Nichols / Lieut Col 118th” over the Plattsburgh imprint of photographer H. K. Averill, Jr.

The carte is in very good condition, having been slightly trimmed off the bottom edge of the mount to an overall size of 2 1/2” x 3 3/4”.
