Featured in this CDV image is General Benjamin F. Butler, best known as a political general and for his leadership role in the impeachment of President Andrew Johnson. He was a colorful and often controversial figure on the national stage and in the Massachusetts political scene. In this 3/4 view Butler wears the uniform of a general in the Massachusetts Militia. On the reverse are modern pencil notations along with the early backmark of E. Anthony of New York, with credit to Mathew Brady’s negative. There is a small area of loss at Butler’s elbow. Measures about 2 1/2” x 4”.
