Pictured in this CDV view by Boston photographers Higgins & Collier is a Union private. He wears a standard frock coat and holds his cap casually at his hip. On the cap are several insignia including a non-standard hunting horn, the letter B, and the number 44. The 44th Massachusetts was a 9-month regiment that served mostly in North Carolina between the fall of 1862 and the summer of 1863. On the reverse is the photographer’s imprint. Light foxing and toning to the mount. Measures about 2 1/2” x 3 3/4”.
