This is an interesting December 1863 Civil War autograph signed letter by Brigadier General J. H. Hobart Ward to John T. Sprague, Adjutant General of the State of New York. Ward, a brigade commander in the Army of the Potomac's 3rd Corps, wrote to Sprague to recommend the promotion of Captain William H. Nash of the 1st U.S. Sharshooters to fill the vacancy left by Lieutenant Colonel Casper Trepp, who had been killed November 30 at the Battle of Mine Run. Instead of Nash, Major Charles Mattocks was brought in from the 17th Maine to take command of the 1st Sharpshooters. The letter reads:

Head Qrs 1st Div 3d Corps

Genl  J. T. Sprague
Adjt Genl S.N.Y.

Sir:
I have the honor to state that during the recent engagements near the Rapidan Lieut Col Trepp 1st Sharpshooters was killed, leaving a vacancy in that Regt.

I would most earnestly request that Capt W. H. Nash of that regiment be commissioned to fill the vacancy. I am induced to make this recommendation from the fact that beyond any doubt he is the ablest and most efficient officer in the Regt and one of the most gallant soldiers in the army.

This officer let the regiment at the recent crossing at Kelly's Ford, being the first Officer across the river, and leading his men to victory.

I earnestly and sincerely hope he may be successful.

I am Sir your Obt Servt
J. H. Hobart Ward
Brig Gen Comdg
