1861 Letter - Postal Agent to General John E. Wool Re: Fort Monroe Mail Route

Offered here is an interesting 1861 Civil War letter written and signed by A. B. Waller, a Special Agent with the Army's Post Office Department. Waller wrote the letter from Fortress Monroe to Major General John E. Wool, commanding the Department of Virginia regarding the opening of a mail route between the Fort and Virginia's eastern shore via Cherrystone Inlet. Docketed on reverse. In full, the letter reads:

December 15th 1861Sir
The Post Office Department propose to have a mail made up every Tuesday, Thursday, & Saturday at Eastville Northampton County Va, and sent to Cherry Stone, by a messenger provided it is convenient for you to have a boat sent over on the same days to meet the messenger with a mail for this place, an exchange pouches.I am Very Respectfully

The letter was written upon an 8" x 9 1/4" stationery sheet. The paper is in good sturdy condition, not stiff, and not particularly delicate even at the folds, where creases remain.
