1862 Letter to General Michael Corcoran Signed by 26 Officers of the 155th New York

Item No. 2567190

An interesting December 1862 Civil War letter written and signed by twenty-six officers of the 155th New York Volunteers to their brigade commander, Brigadier General Michael Corcoran. The 155th, then at Newport News, was part of the "Corcoran Legion," a brigade of mostly Irish volunteers personally raised by Corcoran. In the letter, the officers urged Corcoran to appoint Mr. Bernard McCabe as sutler for the regiment (an 1862 Act of Congress left the appointment of regimental sutlers to brigade commanders). Signers include Colonel William McEvilyLieutenant Colonel James P. McMahonMajor Hugh C. Flood, and the captains and lieutenants of several companies. It reads in full:

The letter was written upon two 7 3/4" x 9 3/4" stationery sheets that were pasted together to form one large 7 3/4" x 18" document. At some point the two sheets were separated by a smooth cut just underneath the bottom edge of the first sheet, and across the top of Colonel McEvily's signature (see photos). The letter is otherwise in excellent condition with light foxing and toning. Creased where originally folded.
