An interesting 1864 Civil War order from a brigade quartermaster in the Army of the Potomac to his subordinate regimental quartermasters. The circular order, dated March 30, 1864 concerns record keeping in the quartermaster's department. It was written and signed by Captain William S. Vatchett, originally of the 20th Indiana. It reads in full:

Hd Qrs 1st Brig. 3d Div. 2d Corps
Q.M. Office, March 30th 1864

Regimental Quartermasters will forward to this Office immediately the following reports for the month of March 1864.

1st. A report of the names of Officers doing duty in the Quartermasters Dept, the number of Officers & enlisted men present, the number of Horses—public & private—mules & other means of transportation in each regiment, on the 31st of March 1864.

2d. The number of Public Horses in the regiment, by whom ridden, & authority therefor.

3d. A report giving the date to which each Q.Mr. has rendered his accounts to the proper department.

4th. Officers of the Qr Mrs Dept, who have failed to render, to the proper departments, their accounts as prescribed  by existing orders & regulations—who are behind hand in the rendition of their accounts—will make written explanations of the cause thereof, to the Chief Quartermaster of the Corps, transmitting the same through this Office.

This report must be sent in by or before 9 A.M. tomorrow morning—

The order was written upon two pages of a sheet of stationery measuring about 7 3/4" x 9 3/4". It is in excellent condition, as shown. Very little wear to edges and corners. Little foxing and toning. Creased where originally folded.
