Item No. SQ8163412

Offered here is an interesting June 1861 military pass. To cross the Potomac River from Washington, DC, to Alexandria, Virginia, required military authorization. This pass, written upon "Military Department of Washington" letterhead, authorized an E. Wadsworth to travel "over the bridge and within the lines--good until 15th inst." The pass is granted, it reads, by the "order of General [Joseph K.] Mansfield," and is signed by Mansfield's aide-de-camp, Captain Drake DeKay, in DeKay's customary large, heavy ink signature. It is signed on the reverse by Wadsworth, as guarantee of his good conduct.

The pass measures about 8" x 5". The paper is in excellent condition and isn't stiff. Little wear to corners or edges. There are two creases from where the pass was previously folded.
