Item No. SQ8831610

Offered here is an interesting Confederate Civil War document signed by then-Major John W. Daniel (later US Representative and United States Senator from Virginia). It was written as a circular to an unknown brigade commander (likely either John B. Gordon, Harry Hays, or John Pegram) in the division of Major General Jubal Early, on whose staff Daniel served as an adjutant. The circular concerns the turning over of excess tents and other baggage to the division quartermaster ahead of the start of the spring campaign (the Battle of the Wilderness would be fought two weeks later). It also includes a decision by Lieutenant Colonel James L. Corley of General Lee's staff.

Head Quarters Early's Division
April 23, 1864

Circular

General
You will at once have all tents of your brigade above the allowance made at General Order No. 27 from Army Head Quarters turned over to Major [Charles E. ] Snodgrass Division Quarter Master to be sent to the rear.

Let your Brigade inspectors see that this order is strictly complied with. You will also direct that the baggage of officers be reduced to the amount allowed by that order in order that they may be no embarrassment in the event of a movement by our Army or that of the enemy and your attention is called to the accompanying decision of Colonel [James L.] Corley.

By Command of Major Genl Early
Jno. W. Daniel
A. A. Genl.

Note
The decision of Colonel Corley is as follows. Transportation for officers baggage includes mess chest and all personal effects.

Respectfully &c,
(signed) J. L. Corley
Lt. Col.

The circular measures about 7 1/2" x 10". Excellent condition. Slightly soiled in a couple of spots. Delicate at the folds, where some shallow separation has begun. Little wear to edges and corners.
