An interesting document signed by then-Colonel Cyrus Bussey of the 3rd Iowa Cavalry in which Bussey, after being promoted to command of all the cavalry in the 16th Army Corps operating in Arkansas and Mississippi, appointed two officers of the 3rd Iowa Cavalry to his staff. Lieutenant Horace Daniel B. Cutler was to be acting assistant adjutant general and Lieutenant Dudley E. Jones acting assistant quartermaster. The order reads:

Head Quarters Cavalry Forces
Detachment 16th Army Corps
Snyders Bluff Miss. June 14th 1863

General Orders
No. 1.

I. In accordance with paragraph IV, Special Orders No. 5, Detachment 16th Army Corps, of this date, the undersigned assumes command of the Cavalry Forces of said Detachment.

II. The following Staff Officers are announced
Lieut H. D. B. Cutler Act’g Ass’t Adj’t Gen’l
Lieut D. E. Jones Act’g Ass’t Quartermaster
who will be respected and obeyed accordingly.

III. All orders heretofore issued will be continued in force; and all returns, reports, &c. will be made promptly at the time when due.

The document is adhered to a narrow paper frame, resulting in an overall size of 7 3/4” x 9 3/4”. It is in excellent condition with minor toning. Creased where originally folded.
