Item No. 2545480

A nice November 1862 Confederate discharge document for Private Erasmus Johnson of the 5th Virginia Infantry (of the “Stonewall Brigade”). It indicates that Johnson enlisted in May 1861 for one year, and that he was honorably discharged “by reason of Conscript Act passed by Confederate States Congress May 10th 1862 and General Order No 36 from War Department.” It lists Johnson as being part of Captain George Washington Kurtz’s Company K, that he was forty-five years old, and was from Frederick County, Maryland. Captain Kurtz’s signature is found at the bottom of the page. (Kurtz would later be wounded July 3, 1863 at Gettysburg and captured May 12, 1864 at Spotsylvania Court House.)

The document measures about 7 1/2” x 9 1/2” and is in good condition with light foxing covering much of the document. It shows many small wrinkles from moisture. It is creased where it was originally folded. On the reverse, a previous owner got creative with his method of reinforcing the folds.
