An interesting army manual titled “The Company Clerk: Showing How And When To Make Out All The Returns, Reports, Rolls, And Other Papers, And What to Do With Them.” Published in 1864 by J. B. Lippincott, Philadelphia, whose ads for other manuals appear on the inside cover panels. The author was Captain August V. Kautz of the 6th U.S. Cavalry and Colonel of the 2nd Ohio Cavalry. Contains 142 pages of instructions for keeping up on the immense amount of paperwork necessary to run a company, including many diagrams.

This copy is marked as having been owned by Lieutenant Henry J. Naughton of the 20th Corps d’Afrique Infantry, which was later renamed the 91st United States Colored Troops.

The manual’s dimensions are 4 3/4” x 7 1/2”. It is in excellent condition with tight binding and good covers, and good cover on the spine as well.
