Item No. 0142578

An interesting September 1863 Civil War requisition form for two coffins needed for deceased members of the 6th Kansas Cavalry. Written and signed by Major Wyllis C. Ransom, the No. 12 requisition form states that on July 31, 1863, $14 was authorized "for 2 Coffins furnished for the burial of Privates [Francis] Marion Asberry and Eli H. Davis of Company B 6th Kansas Cavalry Volunteers delivered at Westport Mo at $7.00 Each." Written perpendicularly in red in is an approval from Brigadier General Ewing (signed by a staff officer). The document was also signed at the bottom by Henry Sager, who must be the carpenter or undertaker who furnished the coffins.

Private Francis M. Asberry is listed as having died of disease on November 25, 1862 at Westport, Missouri. Private Eli H. Davis was killed May 15, 1863 at Jackson County, Missouri.

Briefly docketed on reverse.

The document measures about 8" x 10 1/4" and is in very good condition, as shown. Minor wear to edges and corners. Little foxing and toning. Creased where originally folded, with tape reinforcing the folds on the reverse.
